A first time minister, Kiran Maheshwari’s home ground is Udaipur.
She is now the MLA from Rajsamand and one of the 11 national vice-presidents of the party. She has been a MP from Udaipur for the period 2004-2009. She defeated one of the most strongest women candidates from the Congress, former minister and three times MLA Dr Girija Vyas by over 75,000 votes. Girija Vyas is said to be close to Sonia Gandhi.
A B.Com from Bombay University, Kiran was a councillor and head of a co-operative bank in Rajasthan before becoming an MLA and an MP. She has literally worked her way up in the party. She was the state president of BJP Mahila Morcha from 2000 to 2004. She was also the first woman general secretary of Rajasthan. From 2007, 2010, she was also the national president of BJP Mahila Morcha.
One who works relentlessly, Kiran is also depended upon by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. Raje, who is wooing investors from all over for her industry showcasing her gala event, Resurgent Rajasthan to be held in Nov 2015, sent Maheshwari as an emissary to Pune to do the needful. i.e roadshows for the event in Pune.
Under the ministry, Kiran is trying to bring about changes. Rajasthan will link 564 villages and 307 hamlets with surface water this year. The government will undertake drinking water projects in rural areas also along with urban areas.
Relaxing the norm to set up handpumps, she is ensuring that villages with population of 100 people will now be eligible for handpumps instead of earlier condition of having at least 250 people.
