Former MLA Gurcharan Chabbra who was sitting on a fast unto death since October 2 passed away this morning at the SMS Hospital in Jaipur. He was demanding total liquor ban “purna sharaabbandi” in Rajasthan.
He was elected as MLA from Suratgarh on Janta Party ticket but when the party got disbanded later, he decided not to join any other party. He remained an independent for the rest of his life.
He was admitted to the hospital when his condition started deteriorating. The treating SMS doctors had indicated yesterday about Chhabra getting critical, his BP came down and he slipped into deep coma.
The PUCL president Kavita Shrivastava blamed the Vasundhara Government to have put Chhabra’s life at risk. She said , what he was simply demanding from the government was fulfilling its own commitment that was given in writing to him last year in May when he had sat on a similar fast demanding total prohibition of liquor and strengthening the LOKAYUKTA.
The health minister Rajendra Singh Rathore had signed the agreement on the behalf of the government.
He sat on a fast unto death on 2nd October to remind the govt. to implement its commitment made in 2014. The PUCL alleged that no representative came to see him in hospital. Rajendra Singh Rathore and social justice minister reached the hospital yesterday but that was too late, Kavita Shrivastava said.
He was almost a veteran of hunger strikes and dreamt of Rajasthan as a liquor-free state. He had launched a liquor free campaign also with legendary Gandhian Gokul Bhai Bhatt. He felt a complete ban would solve many problems.
He had pledged to donate his body.
