Jaipur, Nov 24: Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) is perhaps the first in the country to let only women staff single-handedly man a busy metro station from Tuesday. JMRC claims this is their way of empowering women and giving them their own space to lead others and show their mettle.
The Shyam Nagar Metro Station on the Mansarovar-Chandpole route will have 32 women employees, who will manage and control the entire station. The women at the helm would frisk passengers, help in security, aid passengers to purchase tickets and tokens at the vend machines, maintain tracks and civil structures. Customer relations officer would also be present at the station, helping to keep the station spick and span and also customer ready.
According to N C Goel, chairman and managing director of JMRC this is one way of empowering women of the state, which is considered conservative in terms of women personal freedom and liberties.
JMRC already claims 30% of its manpower consists of women, including train operators and station controllers. Even 25% of train operators are women.
The first metro train , which rolled out on June 3 this year, was also manned by a women operator Jyoti Rani Khanakwal.
