Jaipur, Jan 22: Police today lodged a FIR against vice-chancellor and seven professors of Central University of Rajasthan (CU) in Ajmer for allegedly harassing a Dalit research scholar.
A local court in Ajmer on Monday had ordered the police to register a case under the SC/ST Act (Prevention of Atrocities Act) against the faculty members of the university over student Umesh Kishor Jonwal’s allegations that he had been thrown out of the hostel and his scholarship has also been stopped. The Bandia Sindri police station, under which the Central University of Ajmer (about 135 km from here) falls, today registered his complaint.
Jonwal is a Phd scholar student in the social work department of academic session 2013-14. Jonwal is also a recipient of junior research fellowship. He has alleged that he was being harassed by the Vice Chancellor Arun Kumar Pujari.
Pujari was earlier the dean of School of Information and Computer Sciences, University of Hyderabad and was appointed as VC in the Ajmer Central University in September last year.
Jonwal has also named seven other professors in his FIR. They are Dr Jagdish Ulhas Jadhav, Dr Atik Ahmed, Prof RT Pardasani, Prof A P Singh, Dr S Kandaswami, Dr Nagarjuna Ambedkar Sole, Prof A K Gupta for torturing him mentally and physically and also discriminating against him on the basis of caste.
The university had expelled Jonwal, a scholar in the social work department, who is also a recipient of the junior research fellowship, in October stating that he remained absent from the university for more than 15 days in May last year. But Jonwal alleges that even the university administration is also harassing him.
The police complaint is noteworthy after student protests and unrest were sparked off across the country after suicide of Rohith Vemula, a research scholar of University of Hyderabad.
