A 24-hour GPS-enabled helpline number for students enrolled at coaching institutes in Kota will start working soon.
The coaching institutes under pressure for at least 19 suicides in the past year and two this year, have been asked to find ways to relieve tension and stress amongst students. Kota is the coaching hub for students preparing for engineering and medical entrance exams.
So the Kota district administration has decided to restart the helpline to counsel students in distress. The GPS facility will be restricted to Kota district, but students across the country can also call up the helpline numbers.
The collector has also instructed coaching institutes to widely publicize the helpline numbers.
The helpline numbers are 0744-2333666 and 0744-2414141.
The helpline will be run by city-based clinical psychologist Dr M L Agarwal. While speaking to Rajasthan Post, Dr Agarwal said : “The helpline will function from within his clinic, under the registered society ‘Hope.’ The helpline will offer round-the-clock assistance to students through trained and experienced clinical psychologists hired for the purpose. The call centre will have two trained counsellors working in three shifts of eight hours each. The centre has prepared a detailed manual with 60 questions frequently asked by students in distress. A total of seven counselors have been hired for the helpline.”
