Jaipur boy shines in Google contest


Jaipur boy Yathannsh Kulshrestha has brought laurels for his school and city by being one of the winners of Google Code-in contest, 2015. Yathannsh, a class XI student of Jayshree Periwal International School claims to be the first from Rajasthan and amongst a few Indians in the last seven years to become the Google Code-in global winner.
He has been invited to Google Headquarters located in Mountain view, California, USA, in June 2016 to receive his award. The results were declared on Google’s blog on February 8, 2016.
Reacting to his win, Yathannsh said : “I have always dreamt about it and it would be an inspirational trip to the Google Headquarters.”
Google code-in is a global contest to introduce pre-university students to various kind of contributions that make open source software development possible. This 49 day-long contest started on 7th December, 2015 and ended on 25th January, 2016. Around 2700 talented students from 98 countries, interested in computer science, in this competition.
The participants have to associate with one of the open source organizations endorsed by Google and perform a number of tasks related to writing or refactoring code, documentation, training, outreach, research, quality assurance and user interface enhancement. The contest also involves analysis of problems and recommending appropriate solutions and helping others to learn more. Yathannsh was associated with FOSASIA in this contest.
“I had completed 40 tasks in 49 days. The tasks included making Android applications, web applications, designing Homepages for websites and to find out functional errors. Juggling time between the long duration of the contest and the preparations for class XI exam was really a big challenge.” said Yathannsh. Son of Bhuvnesh Kulshrestha, an IRS officer, Yathannsh is a basketball player and is fond of long distance endurance cycling.
He has also founded the club, The Turing Fraternity, a Google CS-first affiliated computer science club to enable computer science enthusiasts to embark on creative journeys. The club is organizing an event in April 2016 in Jaipur, said to be sponsored by global giant Microsoft.
