The annual Desert Festival is on in Jaisalmer from today and the barren, brown, lonely sands around Jaisalmer will come alive with tourists, artists, folk dancers, singers and mesmerizing performances.
The festival, being organized by the Department of Tourism and the District Administration, Jaisalmer, will begin with a ceremonial procession from Gadisar Lake to Shahid Poonam Singh Stadium. Thereafter, tourists can enjoy the Ghoomar dance.
A turban tying competition raises excitement amongst foreigners, something they haven’t done before. Mr Desert, Miss Moomal, Moomal Mahendra, Moustache will also be held among others. Cultural programmes of folk music and dance and fireworks at Shahid Poonam Singh Stadium, will light up every evening of the festival.
There will be other traditional competitions like Camel Decoration, Shah-E-Marudhara, Tug-of-War (Indian V/s Foreigner), Women Wrestling, Camel Polo Match, Panihari Matka Race. There will also be Air Warrior Drill by Indian Air Force and Camel Tattoo Show by Border Security Force and camel race at Sam Sand Dunes. The festival will be on till Feb 10.
