Students’ day out at ‘Bird Fair’


Jaipur, Feb 9 : School students had a field day at the Indian Birding Fair that began today at the Man Sagar lake in Jaipur.

This is the 20th edition of the fair organised by the Tourism and Wildlife Society of India (TWSI). The theme of the fair this year is ‘Fair Conservation’.

The students in got an opportunity to observe as many as 32 species of birds which was spotted at the lake today. Nature experts were present to help them observe the birds and answer their queries. The children also participated in drawing and quiz competitions as well as origami workshops. The Honorary Secretary of TWSI, Mr. Harsh Vardhan said that the USP of the birding fair has always been the enthusiastic participation of the next generation.

Educational sessions were also held on different topics among them being ‘Fairs as Conservation and Tourism Tools’, ‘Tagore’s Nature Poems’, ‘Elephant’s Whispering’ and ‘House Sparrow’.

The co-founder of the British Bird Watching Fair, Dr. Tim Appleton and Faith Singh spoke about the significance of bird fairs which enhances the experience of wildlife. Theatre actor, Parnab Mukherjee threw light on the impact of nature poems. He even enacted a few nature poems from Tagore’s book Stray Birds. The co-founder of wildlife foundation ‘Trunk Call’, Anand Shinde spoke about the family structures of elephants as well as their current status in the world. The coordinator of the fair Sajal Jugran threw light on the breeding patterns of House Sparrows and different methods to conserve them.

Stalls were also set up for creating awareness by different organizations like bird treatment camp (btc), Indian Human Ecology Council, Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organization, Jaipur Federation of Animal Protections Organizations and Angel Eyes.

Among the schools that participated were Maharani Gayatri Devi Girl’s School (MGD), Delhi Public School (DPS), Maheshwari Girls Public School (MGPS), Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan Vidyashram, Cambridge Court etc.

The birding fair will witness its final day tomorrow at the same venue. The entry to the event is complimentary and everyone is welcome to join.
