Jaipur, March 10: Bypoll for the Dholpur Assembly seat would be held on April 9. The seat fell vacant following the termination of the BSP MLA’s B L Kushwah membership of the Vidhan Sabha.
Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha Speaker, Kailash Meghwal, had terminated the membership of Kushwah after he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for honour killing. His membership was terminated on December 8, the day he was sentenced by a court. Kushwah has been disqualified under Article 191 of the Indian Constitution, which is concerned with disqualification of membership of Legislative Assembly or Legislative Council of a state, read with Section 8 (Disqualification on conviction for certain offences) of The Representation of The People Act, 1951.
The gazette notification for the bypoll will be issued on March 14 and the last date for filing nomination would be March 21. The deadline for withdrawal of nomination is March 24, as per the chief election officer, Ashwini Bhagat said in Jaipur.
Dholpur being the home town of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, the bypoll is a prestige issue for the BJP and as the date has been announced, parties are now gearing up for the election.
BJP welcomed Kushwah’s wife, Shobharani into the party last month and is likely to field her as the candidate for the Dholpur seat.
