Jaipur, Mar 29 : Rajasthan government has taken a cue from Chandigarh to dodge the Supreme Court’s order to ban liquor shops within 500 metres of state and national highways.
The state’s public works department (PWD) recently issued an order for denotification of 190 kilometres of 21 state highways passing through 16 districts and measuring 3,029 kilometres as urban roads or other district roads.
Excise duty is one of the biggest revenue earners for Rajasthan and the state cannot afford to lose such a big amount.
Rajasthan earned at least Rs 6,700 crore from excise duty in 2015-16. And the state has set a target of Rs 7, 300 for the year 2016-17.
