Rajasthan royalty voice protest over Padmavati

Jaipur, Nov 9: Royal families of Rajasthan have come together to voice their protest against the depiction of Rani Padmavati in the movie by the same name.

While erstwhile Jaipur royal family has openly come out against its director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, saying he had initially agreed to show the film before its release and remove any objectionable scenes, there are many other royals from Jodhpur, Mewar, Bikaner, who have expressed their concern against the film.

Jodhpur’s Maharaja Gaj Singh says historical films should always be shot after adequate research and film makers should refrain from misusing historical characters.

Mahendra Singh Mewar of Mewar royalty asks : “Would Censor Board pass a film if Prime Minister Narendra Modi was depicted in a way that does not or match his characteristics.

Bikaner’s Princess Siddhi Kumari, who is also a BJP MLA, quips “that a disclaimer by Bhansali that all characters in the film are imaginary, is not going to satisfy people of Rajasthan as everyone here knows about Padmavati’s great sacrifice.

Jaipur’s Princess Diya Kumari, who has been at the forefront of the agitation against the film, held a presser yesterday to put forth the demands of the Rajput community.

She said the tale of Maharani Padmavati of Chittor and the 16000 women who committed jauhar (self-Immolation) along with her is a testimony of extreme valour and courage of which history has witnessed.

Diya Kumari categorically said “that the entire country irrespective of one’s caste or religion, are immensely proud of the history of Chittor. Any attempt to distort the history or twist the facts will be a collective insult to the women of this country who have immense pride in the sacrifice made by Rani Padmavati and the brave women with her. She was not only a courageous woman but has also been a legend for centuries.
She said :”No filmmaker should take liberties of distorting the facts which will not be acceptable to the people of the country.”

Rajmata Padmini Devi, Diya Kumari’s mother said that when Bhansali started with the shooting of Padmavati, he had agreed to screen the film before us. He had also consented to screen the film before the launch of any song or trailer of the film. However, he later backed out of his commitment.

National President, Karni Sena Mahipal Singh Makrana said that the film won’t be allowed to be released in Rajasthan if it has a dream sequence of Allauddin Khilji with Rani Padmavati. In fact, any scene of a Rani Padmavati and Allauddin Khilji together should be removed. If Bhansali agrees to make the changes in the film and pre-screen it, its release will be considered.
Anshika Kumari of Karauli royal family says Bhansali has been asked to make the required changes in the film for the past two years but he hasn’t complied so far.

Randhir Singh Bhinder of Bhinder royalty says this issue has been raised in the Vidhan Sabha as well and we have been demanding that the committee which would be formed should also include members of the Mewar royal family so that they can correct the film.

There is also concern about the song Ghoomer, performed by Deepika. It is said that members of royalty especially queens did not perform such dances in those days, where it has been shown in the film.
