Jaipur Jan 16:The long promised Barmer refinery has finally taken off with Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching its commencement today at Panchpadra.
The 43,129 crore refinery is expected to be a boon for the desert state as it promises greater employment, revenues for the state.
Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje renegotiated the deal with HPCL bringing down the interest free loan burden of the state government from Rs 3,637 crore fixed by the previous Congress government to Rs 1,123 crore and saving Rs 2514 crore. The deal is also likely to save the state Rs 40,000 crore with annual viability gap funding at Rs 1,123 crore for 15 yers. The refinery is likely to take four people years to be built.
Barmer refinery is likely to be the most advanced and eco-friendly refinery. Conforming to the BS-VI standard, the refinery will produce fuel with less sulphur and other pollutants.
The BJP is expecting political gains from the refinery and that is why Raje insisted on getting Modi to literally relaunch the refinery with Congress vehemently opposing it saying its foundation stone having been laid by Sonia Gandhi in 2013 already.
But is the refinery really going to help local people gain employment or is it going to be vote garner for the ruling party just before elections.
