The verdict in the rape case against self-styled godman Asaram Bapu will be pronounced from a jail court for security reasons. The judgement is scheduled on April 25.
Anticipating trouble from Asaram’s followers, the Jodhpur police had moved the high court to seek directions to the trial court to pronounce the judgment in the case in the Jodhpur Central Jail, where the accused has been imprisoned since August 2013.
The special SC/ST trial court had completed the final arguments in the case on 7 April.
Asaram’s followers have many times clashed with the Jodhpur police on the court premises and the police have had a very tough time in dealing with them.
It may be recalled that conviction of Dera Sachcha Sauda supremo Gurmeet Ram Raheem had led to widespread chaos and violence by his followers resulting in the death of more than 30 persons.
The police anticipated such a situation in Jodhpur and stated in its application that the huge presence of Asaram’s followers in the city on the judgment day could create law and order situation.
