Jaipur, Aug 23: Former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s ashes were immersed in holy Pushkar sarovar today. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was present on the occasion along with her cabinet colleagues and a large number of local people
The urn carrying the ashes of late Vajpayee were brought to Pushkar in a special chariot and a large number of people paid respects to the departed leader at many places in the town.
Pushkar is one of the oldest cities of India.According to legends, Lord Brahma, believed to be the creator of the universe, dropped a lotus on the ground leading to the immediate creation of a lake. He then decided to name the place after the flower, and thus the area got the name Pushkar. The city is home to the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in the world. Hindus consider a journey to Pushkar to be the ultimate pilgrimage that must be undertaken to attain salvation.
The urn carrying Vajpayee’s ashes was brought to the Gau ghat, where Raje immersed the ashes amidst Vedic chanting and slogans like “jab tak sooraj chand rahega, Atal Behari ka naam rahega.”
Union minister CR Choudhury, Rajasthan social justice minister Arun Chaturvedi, education minister Vasudev Devnani, women and child development minister Anita Bhadel and chairperson of Rajasthan Heritage Conservation Authority Onkaar Singh Lakhawat were among those present on the occasion.
It may be recalled that the ashes of late Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi were also immersed in Pushkar sarovar.
